Office of the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission In-Take Process
Any person who is a citizen of the Navajo Nation may file a complaint with the Office of the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission (ONNHRC). All filed complaints are reviewed by the ONNHRC Executive Director and/or the ONNHRC Attorney to determine whether a formal investigation will be conducted.
All formal complaints filed with the ONNHRC will comply with the set of laws, rules & procedures stated in the Navajo Nation Codes, the State Constitution, and the Federal Constitution. The following are the steps involved:
In-Take Process
- All complaints must be filed with the ONNHRC within 365 days of the alleged violation and be submitted on an official form -- NNHRC 1A and NNHRC 1B (available below).
- Form NNHRC 1A must contain the name and address of the client filing the complaint and the party who violated the client’s rights.
- A detailed, factual description of what occurred and how the client’s rights were violated, is required on form NNHRC 1A.
- Supporting documents, including any eyewitness, should be included.
- Both forms must be signed and dated by the client, which will then authorize the ONNHRC to start its investigation.
- The ONNHRC Executive Director and/or the ONNHRC Attorney shall review all filed complaints and determine if an investigation is needed.
- When an investigation is conducted, the ONNHRC will work closely with the Federal, State, City, and other Municipal Agencies.
- A letter and report will be generated by the ONNHRC to the client and the Commissioners about the investigation and their outcome.
